"SamSamma:an" is a Saisiyat word meaning "the place where water springs year-round and flows continuously," symbolizing the enduring power of life, production, and culture. Located in Daai, Wufeng Township, Hsinchu County, SamSamma lies within the traditional settlement area of Northern Saisiyat (Say Kilapa). For generations, our people have lived to the rhythm of the forest—sustaining the community through bamboo groves, farming, rituals, and shared cultural life. Bamboo is not only a vital material for buildings, tools, and daily objects; it is also the medium for ritual culture, collective labor, and the passing of traditional knowledge, carrying the Saisiyat people's cultural memory of living in harmony with the land.
Yet as industry shifts and society changes, the village has gradually faced youth outflow, the decline of the bamboo industry, abandoned groves, an aging population, and gaps in cultural inheritance. Since 2019, accompanied by Minghsin University of Science and Technology's USR (University Social Responsibility) program, the village began rethinking "how to make bamboo forests an asset rather than a burden," and through repeated village meetings and collective discussion, gradually formed a direction centered on bamboo culture, organized as a cooperative, and aimed at sustainable living.
In 2024, community members jointly established "Limited Liability Hsinchu County SamSamma Bamboo Industry Production Co-op," building an autonomous tribal economy through bamboo forest management, bamboo charcoal production, bamboo vinegar development, bamboo crafts, and cultural experiences. At the same time, this development reconnected Saisiyat bamboo knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, the tinato' ritual spirit, and land ethics, making culture the core value of the enterprise. The cooperative also actively attracts returning youth by combining design, marketing, digital technology, and management expertise to promote intergenerational collaboration and innovation.
SamSamma is more than a village name; it is a sustainable practice rooted in cultural revitalization, industrial innovation, and tribal autonomy—demonstrating the Saisiyat people's shared vision of reclaiming land, culture, and future development sovereignty.
